Planting Trees in Silver City since 2025
Silver City NeighborWoods, a Tree NM Statewide Program
Tree New Mexico's NeighborWoods has grown to reach Silver City! This new branch of the Statewide Planting program was established in 2025. Tree New Mexico received a grant through the USDA Inflation Reduction Act to do the statewide tree plantings.
SPRING PLANTINGS: Silver City has two plantings scheduled this Spring 2026: April 11 and May 30. Check out the Tree NM planting calendar for more events and tree education. If you live in Silver City and would like a free tree planted in your front yard, please submit a request here. We dig the holes and plant the trees for free! Tree adopters must agree to water and care for the tree. Tree New Mexico will provide tree care classes to learn more about trees – both old young and old.

Learn more about Silver City NeighborWoods
Silver City NeighborWoods is an effort to increase the urban tree canopy in the region. Primarily we plant trees on private property, specifically front yards that border streets to decrease the heat island effect - a phenomenon where cities experience significantly warmer air and surface temperatures than surrounding rural areas. Did you know in cities up to 80% of land is privately owned? That's why we plant diverse tree varieties on private land - for the largest impact.
Our sister program is the Southwest Community Forestry Network which plants trees on public property and works to create urban forestry plans with southwest municipalities, which we have utilized to focus our efforts. Please visit their information on Silver City which includes our community's urban forestry plan.
