Planting Trees in Silver City since 2025

Silver City NeighborWoods, a Tree NM Statewide Program

Tree New Mexico's NeighborWoods has grown to reach Silver City! This new branch of the Statewide Planting program was established in 2025. Tree New Mexico received a grant through the USDA Inflation Reduction Act to do the statewide tree plantings.

SPRING PLANTINGSSilver City has two plantings scheduled this Spring 2026: April 11 and May 30. Check out the Tree NM planting calendar for more events and tree education. If you live in Silver City and would like a free tree planted in your front yard, please submit a request here. We dig the holes and plant the trees for free! Tree adopters must agree to water and care for the tree. Tree New Mexico will provide tree care classes to learn more about trees – both old young and old.

Silver City Area of Interest for 2026 April/May plantings

Silver City Area Of Interest 1 (AOI1)

Our Spring 2026 plantings in Silver City are in the area of north of US-180 and west of Silver St., east of Ursa Minor (Starsky), and south of Cain Dr. This area was selected because it has less than a 30% tree canopy - the minimum coverage needed in a neighborhood to provide significant health, cooling, and environmental benefits. This neighborhood includes an area ranked as highest priority to increase Tree Equity in the Town of Silver City's 2025 Community Forestry Management Plan. If you live in this area and would like to adopt a tree please click button below. If you don't live in this area - please apply as the more interest we receive the higher priority we can give your neighborhood for future plantings . So tell your neighbors. *Hang tight! We’ll get back to you when we can, our tiny team is working hard behind the scenes!

Learn more about Silver City NeighborWoods

Silver City NeighborWoods is an effort to increase the urban tree canopy in the region. Primarily we plant trees on private property, specifically front yards that border streets to decrease the heat island effect -  a phenomenon where cities experience significantly warmer air and surface temperatures than surrounding rural areas. Did you know in cities up to 80% of land is privately owned? That's why we plant diverse tree varieties on private land - for the largest impact.

Our sister program is the Southwest Community Forestry Network which plants trees on public property and works to create urban forestry plans with southwest municipalities, which we have utilized to focus our efforts. Please visit their information on Silver City which includes our community's urban forestry plan
