We’re thrilled to share some big news as we begin the new year! Tree New Mexico has welcomed a new Executive Director, Javier Mathew “Mateo” Carrasco, who officially joined us in late December.

Mateo brings a wealth of experience and passion to our mission. With degrees in biology, sustainability, and Chicano studies, a master’s in nonprofit management, and a strong background in urban agriculture and food systems, he is deeply committed to the communities we serve across New Mexico. Mateo also has prior success leading a nonprofit organization, making him well-prepared to guide TreeNM into its next chapter.

As part of this transition, our longtime Executive Director, Shannon Horst, will move to the TreeNM Board of Directors, ensuring continuity and a smooth handoff.

Over the coming months, we look forward to introducing Mateo at upcoming events, plantings, and meetings.
