Tree Care Over The Winter – Watering and Mulch – Yes!

Trees need water over the winter.
Make sure you are watering low and slow so the water can penetrate deeply (about 12-18 inches into the ground).
Also, putting a 4 to 6 inch layer of mulch around your tree will help the tree’s roots over the winter.  It is best to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk though.  When you water, be sure to soak all the mulch thoroughly.

Frequency:
November: Once a week
December and January: One to two times per month
February: Once a week

ABC Tree Stewards Find a New Home

On January 1, 2021, the day-to-day oversight of the ABC Tree Stewards Training Program will become the responsibility of Tree New Mexico. A collaborative effort, this training program began in 2018. It is geared for volunteers who want to influence and work with the Greater Albuquerque Area’s urban canopy. The program includes an amazing group of volunteers with knowledge and expertise in pruning, planting, mapping, education, and much more.

Partners of Tree New Mexico responsible for the inception of this program include The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation, CIUDAD Soil and Water Conservations Service, The Nature Conservancy, Water Utilities Authority, NMSU Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension, and the County of Bernalillo Open Space Division.

The 2021 training program awaits the lifting of COVID restrictions. If you or someone you know might like to be a Tree Steward, get in touch with Kelly at kwhite@treenm.com. An application will be sent to those who are interested as soon as dates for the training can be secured. You do not have to be a resident of Albuquerque to participate.

APS’s Career Enrichment Center Plants Urban Forest

The earth is moving in preparation for the initial planting of a small urban forest on the Career Enrichment Center’s campus. Located just south of Albuquerque High School in the Martineztown Neighborhood, teachers are preparing once again to provide an exceptional learning opportunity to upper division students throughout APS. Beginning in 2021 the curriculum will again include urban forestry.

Tree New Mexico welcomes schools throughout New Mexico that might want to sign up for designing and planting an urban forest on their campus at www.treenm.org.

The proposed area to be planted will include stormwater mitigation through swales and sponges. It will be planted in multi-species of trees providing everything from canopy, to color to even NM ethno-history.

A preliminary schematic continues to evolve as ideas and opportunities move forward.

The first CEC planting is scheduled to happen on April 17, 2021. The initial participating partners in this first planting include: Tree New Mexico, the Foundation for Building a Sustainable World, Albuquerque Public Schools, the Career Enrichment Center Administration and Faculty, Groundworks Studios and Verizon through the Arbor Day Foundation.
