We hope everyone is staying safe and well. We have been busy here at TNM. Check it out!
– Despite COVID restrictions, we were able to complete all the ABQ NeighborWoods Spring plantings under a plan approved by the Office of Emergency Management. There are now 432 new trees in Albuqueruque!
Many thanks to the City councilors Benton, Gibson and Davis for their sponsorship, and to the committed group of certified tree planting experts who (along with their small family groups) helped us plant!

– We are currently out canvassing for tree adopters in our Fall ABQ NeighborWoods neighborhoods. We are planning for 1000 new trees this Fall! Thanks to City councilors Benton, Davis, Harris and Jones.

Welcome Our New Team Member Tamar Randall!
Tamar Randall, CGW, SHRM-CP is a Certified Grant Writer with the American Grant Writers’ Association and Certified Professional with SHRM. She has a BS in Biology. She has submitted three grants since she started working with us and secured one already. She enjoys words, science, and people and is excited to join the Tree New Mexico Team to plant trees across NM. You can contact her at trandall@treenm.com.
Annual Arborist Audits Complete
Here are some of the common findings (we will be sending out information to individuals shortly as well).
– The most common overall finding was not watering consistently and deeply.
Please remember that your trees need water 3 times per week in the summer and through most of September. In later Fall twice a week should be sufficient. Trees need water in the Winter too – twice per month is usually recommended.
Let your hose run low and slow. Soils high in clay accept water slowly, as do compacted soils. If water starts to pool or run off, stop irrigating, let the water soak in, and start watering again. Repeat on/off cycles until you apply enough water to wet the soil down to about 18 inches.
– Dieback due to herbacides
Weed killer will kill all broadleaf plants – trees included. Young trees are especially sensitive to chemicals as they are establishing their new roots. Please refrain from using weed killer near your trees.
– Trunk Damage
Weed-wackers and running into the tree with a mower are two of the biggest contributors to trunk damage. We recommend hand trimming close to your trees.
– Staking
Stakes should be removed after one growing season. Improper staking can weaken and damage your tree.
Proper way to stake trees: Use soft material, and preferably 3 stakes. Make a loop at the trunk so the tree can move a little. This helps the roots to strengthen themselves ultimately creating a more stable tree.

Spring 2020 Plantings

PANA/Mile Hi, Martineztown, and Victory Hills/University Heights now have new trees!
The ABQ NeighborWoods program has added approximately 1450 Street trees and approximately 1400 Giveaway trees to Albuquerque’s neighborhoods since 2017.
Woodward House Update
– Tree New Mexico and Albuquerque’s Open Space Division are still working together to rebuild the Woodward House Outdoor Classroom and Tree Nursery. Like most efforts of this type, COVID has slowed things down considerably. We are looking forward to crafting a long term plan together, stay tuned.– Over this summer our awesome volunteers have been caring for a small number of orphan trees from our NeighborWoods Program’s spring tree plantings, Open Space Division’s left-over 2019 understory plants and The Nature Conservancy’s “Pop-up Park”. The park will be heading back this month to a new home in the International District of Albuquerque.
Tree New Mexico wants to say a big “Thank you!” to Jen and Missy for keeping things alive and green during the summer heat. We cannot do this work without you and your dedicated service.
